Abstract
This thesis is a summary of work conducted in the course of investigation of superoscillating acoustic aperture arrays. In it we show that superoscillating acoustic apertures arrays are possible, give conditions and new design techniques for the implementation of such aperture arrays; show that in isotropic conditions diffraction gratings can superoscillate, and show by counterexample that not all diffraction gratings superoscillate. Consecutively we demonstrate previous detection methods for superoscillations and where some of the issues with them arise, before proposing a new detection method for superoscillations based on work performed by Aharonov. This work shows the efficacy of the new method, retrieving a result that Aharonov superoscillations occur in roughly 0.3% of 50, 000 random fields and show the problem with windowing with Berry's method. In the conclusion we discuss possible uses for these new techniques of design and detection, as well as future work that could be performed, such as expanding the aperture geometry basis sets and optimising detection methods so that they can be more easily implemented in real world scenarios.
