Abstract
The purpose of this doctoral study is to explore how IT practice-led teachers inform their professional experience on the educational experience of IT degree students and the relationship which emerged from this investigation on graduates’ employability in the specific context of the IT field which is composed of the primary and secondary IT sectors, operating in the global dimension in terms of talents and markets. A mixed methods approach is adopted in this study, consisting of semi-structured interviews with practice-led teachers, student surveys (course-level and programme-level) and class observations for disciplinary inquiry, and integrated research is used for exploring the topic of project management. Key emerging themes include practice-led teaching profiling and the importance of capital distinctions; co-curricular course design, experiential learning and networking; the organising principle between the first principle’s teaching approach and vocational training approach, positioning of educational authenticity and authentic work practices in acquiring applied and practical practices, classroom community of disciplinary inquiry on intellectual project works, and the integrated view on project management among different research instruments.
This study is specific to the context of IT degree programmes with reference to the Hong Kong higher education system. The research implications may be relevant to other contexts whose programme orientations are applied and practical in nature when the notion of knowledge structures for expertise development is considered. This potential is identified in the study. The educational value can be drawn to the possible concepts of educational authenticity and resemblances in the acquisition of professional practices in the university environment.
