Abstract
Wearable body centric wireless communication technologies require antennas that can operate when being subjected to bending due to conformal placement and movement of the human body.
A trapezoidal patch antenna (TPA) has been found to be less susceptible to bending effects than a traditional rectangular patch antenna (RPA). The antenna’s suitability for wearable offbody communication links operating at the 2.4 GHz ISM band has been investigated. The TPA is modelled for the first time using the Aperture Array Model and the Cylindrical Aperture Array Model which incorporates antenna E-plane bending. The analysis is taken further with full-wave simulations and shows that the TPA is less susceptible to bending effects, particularly E-plane bending compared to a RPA. However, there is a radiation performance degradation when compared to the RPA. To overcome this, the TPA is further improved by implementing an artificial magnetic conducting (AMC) metafilm array configuration for an edge fed antenna. The trapezoidal patch antenna loaded with the AMC metafilm (TPA-MF) leads to enhanced radiation performance with a realized gain of up to 6.56 dBi and a radiating element surface area reduction of 48.9% when compared to a RPA.
