Abstract
Accurate assessment of oocyte and embryo quality remains a key challenge for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) success, where current methods are often subjective and invasive. This thesis investigates the use of optical tweezers for passive microrheology, revealing stage-specific differences in the embryo microenvironment and viability-related differences in the oocyte microenvironment. It also shows that discrete light wavelengths can alter embryo development in ways undetectable by routine morphology. Collectively, these findings establish optical tweezers as a non-invasive approach to assess developmental potential and emphasise the critical role of regulated light conditions in optimising IVF outcomes.
